Candice Morgan (PhD Student)

Making Change Happen

As a child growing up on a farm in South Carolina, Candice Morgan helped her family deliver food to others who didn’t have enough. Her dedication to serving those in need only grew from there. Her first official foray into social work practice was a year of service at Healthcare for the Homeless in Baltimore through the Lutheran Volunteer Corps. Since then, her life has been devoted to improving the lives of the least-served populations with the greatest need, whether working with homeless people on the streets or serving inmates on death row.
After years of practicing social work, Morgan pursued a PhD to deepen her understanding of the field and to seek answers to questions she had as a practitioner. Her dissertation is focused on the lived experiences of unsheltered people, especially those who refuse shelter and those with mental illness—groups she says are “out of the sight of the world.”

Whether in front of the classroom or sitting across from a client, Morgan seeks to make change happen by making connections with people. Paying attention and listening to those who are often ignored are important to her, and she challenges her students to take time to be equally attentive to the world around them.
