Timothy Cross (Ph.D. student)

Timothy Cross received his BS in social work at Western Carolina University in 2000. After completing his MSW at USC in 2002, Timothy went to work at an Asheville area non-profit as a Family Preservation Specialist. Working closely with the Department of Social Services, Juvenile Justice, and local mental health providers, Timothy spent his first two years in the field as an in-home worker with children at risk of being placed out-of-home and, later, five years as Program Coordinator of this program. With a desire to further his studies, Timothy returned to the CoSW in 2010 as a doctoral student. Today, he is a doctoral candidate and is working towards a graduate certificate in Women & Gender Studies. His dissertation concerns the representation of voices within online media during the government shutdown of 2013, paying particular attention to the presence or absence of typically marginalized groups within online media’s reporting of this event.  The chair of Timothy’s dissertation committee is Dr. Ronald Pitner.
