Regional Award for Health Care Leadership: Anton J. Gunn Anton J. Gunn of Atlanta, Ga., is the regional director for the Region IV Office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Gunn began his career as a health care reformer and community organizer. His work has included consumer advocacy on health care issues such as managed care policy, HIV/AIDS funding, hospital conversions and social justice. The first African American elected to represent S.C. District 79, Gunn served on a White House Health Care Task Force of State Legislators for Health Reform and was an active partner with Families USA, a national organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans. He has been active on all levels in the fight for health care reform. In 2006, he received the honor of being named one of the Top 10 Leaders in the Rural South by the Southern Rural Development Initiative. Gunn earned a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in social work from the University of South Carolina. |

Region IV is HHS's largest region in population and domestic geography and comprises Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Medical center was useful as it helped me develop skills in discharge planning for complex patients; complete psychosocial assessment; utilization of brief counseling techniques including contribution to case management outcome measures and development of social work specific outcome indicators.
