Danielle "Dani"(Smith) Cady, MSW 2007,works as case manger for a nonprofit therapeutic center in Columbia and recently  passed the licensure exam. She married 2nd Lt. Stephen Cady on June2,2007. 

Shawnee Entzminger, MSW 2007, writes: "I graduated in May 2007 from the Advanced Standing Class.  Since then I have secured employment with Palmetto AIDS Life Support Services as a Program Manager for a community level intervention to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS among African Americans.  I am getting married on September 22, 2007 to Olando McCaster and plan to pursue my licensure (LMSW) in December of 2007.   I hope this is enough excitement to be printed because it’s exciting to me."

Erin Flury, MSW 2007 recently moved to Pennsylvania and is working for Chester County Dept. of Children Youth and Families as a Foster Care Caseworker.

Rochelle Renee Green, MSW 2007, is the review board coordinator for Children's Foster Care Review Board. In her spare time she sings soprano with the Sandlapper Singers and Trenholm Road Methodist Church Coir.

Dolores("Dee") Harrington-Hucks,LMSW 2007, works at Mattie C.Hall Health Care Center-Aiken. She took and passed the LMSW exam in July 2007. 

Michelle Skinner Makarski, MSW 2007, recently passed the Social Work Master's Level Board Examination and is licensed in South Carolina. 

Joan M. Pendergast, Ph.D 2007, LMSW, is employed at Concord University  (West Virginia) as assistant professor of social work. 

Katie Wicker, MSW 2007, is employed at Palmetto Health's Adolescent Recovery Center in Lexington, S.C.

Tamilia Bland, MSW 2006, writes: I have obtained by license LCSW-P, this is a provisional status until I obtain my hours of supervision in NC. I also have a job in the as the Intensive care social worker of Pulmonary/Neuro Units. I started in July and it is a challenge but I am enjoying the new job.

Jennifer Browder, LMSW 2006, is project coordinator on a research study at the Medical University of South Carolina's Family Services Research Center. She earned her LMSW license in September 2006. Jennifer and husband, Jamie, gave birth to their first child, Will, October 23,2006. 

Erin Donovan, LMSW 2006, is employed at the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program as the DSS Licensing/Training Project Coordinator.

Jeremy McCleery, MSW 2006, featured in The State Newspaper for his work with the homeless population.

Jessica Warble, MSW 2006, is the coordinator of Case Management and Clinical Services at Epworth Children's Home in Columbia.

Carmen K Jimenez, MSW 2005; writes: Currently I work for Mecklenburg County Youth and Family Services in Charlotte North Carolina as a Family Intervention Social Worker. I am also working on a PhD in Human Services with a focus on Nonprofit Management.

Laura McClard, MSW 2005 ; writes: I live in Jackson, Missouri with my husband. I am a medical social worker at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I work on the psychiatric unit as well as the other medical floors and I'm working toward obtaining my LCSW licensure. Hope all is well, class of '05!

Karen Miller-Williams, MSW 2005, writes: I am currently working at Lexington Medical Center as a Medical Social Worker on PCU and SDICU. I actually did my first internship at LMC and was hired PRN three years ago. I started full time this February and love it. I hope all of you in the class of 2005 are doing well.

Rebecca Miller, LMSW 2005, writes: I've moved to Greenville, SC and am working as an adult and adolescent counselor in Outpatient Services at The Phoenix Center, Greenville County's authority on substance abuse treatment.

Heather Murphy, MSW 2005, Hey everyone! Hope that you are all doing well. I was interviewed last week by Kelly Bothum, a journalist for the Delaware newspaper the News Journal. For those of you in SC, it's about the same size and distribution as the State. I made it in the paper yesterday! It is a great article about my organization, the programming we offer, and my role as a health educator. If you get a minute, please check it out! Lindsay Smith, LMSW 2005, writes: I am currently working as the social worker/discharge planner at Wellstar Cobb Hospital on the oncology floor in Austell, GA. I am also involved in the Star Cancer Support Group on the hospital campus. I am living in Atlanta and love the city life! Take care class of 2005!

Stephen Steiger, LMSW 2005, recently began work at Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands, as the Director of Therapy and Outreach Services. Stephen is currently under supervision for his LISW-CP.  Stephen previously had four years of involvement with the SC Department of Social Services working as an Intern with Managed Treatment Services of the Midlands, The State Office of Managed Treatment Services, Lexington County Department of Social Services, and as a full time employee for Lexington County Department of Social Services in Child Protective Services as a Treatment Case Manager.  Stephen had also successfully completed the Child Welfare Traineeship Program Through The Center of Child and Family Services. Stephen has completed several course training's in Sexual Maltreatment including "Finding Words" through the Assessment Resource Center.  Stephen recently began extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral/Rational Living Therapy, and has competed Level I training. He will take Level II training in November of 2007, and Level III training in February 2008. Stephen is very excited with the challenges and opportunities that his new position at Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands presents. He is privileged to work with a brilliant, devoted, and highly motivated staff, volunteers, and Interns from both Social Work as well as other disciplines. Stephen would like to personally thank Annette Boette, and extraordinary Social Worker, who graciously has given extensive guidance and superb counsel over the course of his career as a Social Worker.

Jessica Stine, MSW 2005, writes: Hey guys! This is Jessica - as you may know, I'm a social worker down in Charleston, South Carolina working for Heartland Hospice. Yesterday, I was able to make one of my patient's "last wish" come true. His dream was to fly on a Cessna 310 airplane... after a couple weeks of research, I was able to find an owner who could take this Hospice patient up on his plane. NBC and the Post and Courier (Charleston paper) covered this story, which was an absolutely amazing experience. I wanted to send you all the link to check this story out:

Betsy Walker, LMSW 2005, writes: I am currently working in South Eastern Idaho in a small town called St Anthony and I live in Rexburg which is around 11 miles South of St Anthony. I am a supervisor for a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program for children ages 2 to 12 and also a counselor for that same population. The agency I work for is called Team Supportive Services and they have been in business for five years. I graduated on May 5th of 2005 and went to work on the 23rd of that same month, I love my job and I love the area. We are 85 miles south of Yellowstone and I love driving through the park during the summer. I am so happy to be out of school, I might add. Life is good!


Class of 2004

Lacey Bartness, LMSW, MSW 2004, writes:  I am currently living and working in Greenville, SC. I am a Counselor in Outpatient Services at The Phoenix Center. The Phoenix Center is formerly Greenville County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Lee Anna Belton, MSW 2004 writes: I am currently working as a Treatment Coordinator for Pressley Ridge, a non-profit therapeutic foster care agency located in Washington, DC. I have passed my social work license exam and in a few months will also be working part time as a family therapist. In the Spring 05, I will be start taking some law classes as that is my next professional goal.

Jennifer Blackledge, LMSW 2004, writes: After working two years with a grant to establish a geriatric hypertension program at Palmetto Health, I have now moved to Senior Primary Care Practice (also with Palmetto Health in Columbia) to serve as a "Social Work Case Manager". I am mostly providing direct social work services to older adults, but I am also keeping our hypertension clinic and lifestyle classes up and running!

Tracie Bodford, MSW 2004, is currently working at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine, as a family support social worker. She says she is mostly working with substance-addicted babies, but also carries a beeper and helps with crises that may arise or with families who need emotional support. Tracie is working toward her LCSW license. Her fiancé is a juvenile correctional officer at Charleston Correctional Center in Charleston, Maine. Tracie reports that the weather there is finally somewhat warm! It generally stays in the 50s and 60s. Her plans for the future? They are going to enjoy Maine while they are there and will most likely relocate to North Carolina within two years so that they may finally get married in the presence of their families.

David Cecil, PhD 2004, has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the East Tennessee State University Department of Social Work.

Mary Ellen B. Chafin, MSW 2004, is the Executive Director for the Institute for Human Services and Public Policy at Louisiana State University Shreveport. Hope you are doing great!

Regina Chestnut, MSW 2004, writes: Hello to all! I’m Regina; I received a graduate degree in Social Work from the University of South Carolina in 2004. I see some of buddies are doing well, Just a small SHOUT OUT: Hey Charlita, Glenn & Melinda! I miss ya’ll so much! Well since graduating I move back to my native hometown-Myrtle Beach and provided mental health counseling to adolescents and families at the Myrtle Beach Middle School, employed by the Waccamaw Mental Health Department. Due to my candidacy to campaign for Myrtle Beach City Council in November of 2005, I resigned that position and I began a consulting & training business (Chestnut Consulting & Training) in Myrtle Beach. I am very involved with my community and was appointed to serve on the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission (3 year term). I’m very excited for everyone that has reported accomplishments after graduating! Glenn Conklin, MSW 2004, is working for John Snow, Inc., (JSI) in Arlington, Va., as a program coordinator. JSI is an international public health consulting firm with six offices in the United States that work on domestic contracts awarded by state and federal governments around a variety of public health issues ranging from maternal health to tobacco-related issues. Globally, JSI has 47 field offices throughout the world. A bulk of the international work they do is African countries, primarily central and southern Africa. They are a major contractor for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The largest program in the Arlington, Va., office is Deliver. Deliver is a USAID project that deals exclusively with developing and implementing logistics to provide medical supplies contraceptives to a select group of countries where the infrastructure does not support any type of self-sustainment. Glen provides support to many of the ! programs in the Arlington office, assists with strategic planning, and reviews and audits country and technical assistance reports. He also handles visa processing for employees who travel abroad and develops and implements training for U.S. and field office staffers. Recent training sessions were held in Ghana, Ethiopia, Romania, South African, and the Philippines. Glenn recently returned from Harare, Zimbabwe, where he worked with members of the World Health Organization (based in Geneva, Switzerland) to help develop a curriculum for JSI’s Injection Safety Project, which was funded through USAID and CDC.

Jennifer Crenshaw, MSW 2004, writes: I am living in Six Mile, South Carolina and am working for Hospice Care of South Carolina as the social worker in their Pickens County office.

Sharon D. Daniels, MSW 2004, writes: I am the Shelter Coordinator at CASA/Family Systems in Orangeburg, SC which is a nonprofit organization that house women and their childen who are victims of domestic violence. My duties include overseeing the entire operation at the shelter, managing staff and proving counseling, etc.

Catherine Gregory, LMSW 2004, is now working with the Alston Wilkes Society Youth Services Division as the Quality Assurance and Training Coordinator.

Andrea Harris, MSW 2004, writes: I live in Travelers Rest South Carolina. Since graduation I have worked with South Carolina Mental Health in assessment and emergency services. Recently I started a new job at SpringBrook Behavioral Health in Travelers Rest as their admissions coordinator. SpringBrook offers both an acute care psy. unit for adults as well as a residential treatment program for children and adolescents.

Jessica Hughes, MSW 2004, married “her wonderful love,” Beach Loveland, on May 28th. It’s impossible not to love someone named “Beach”!

Shakina T. Jones, MSW 2004 writes: I currently reside in Trenton, NJ where I am employed as a Mental Health Practitioner at Trenton Central High School.

Michelle Kaiser, MSW 2004, is working as the family selection coordinator for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina.

Melinda Leabch, MSW 2004. Director of Career and Educational Services at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth. Fort Worth, TX. I have been working for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth since graduation in 2004. I have moved up the ladder very quickly in my few years of employment. First began as a Project Advisor for the First Generation College Student Program which is a college prep program for low income first generation college students. I was then promoted to Program Director of Career Launch, which is a job training and job placement program for teenage gang members. From there I received my most recent promotion to Director of Career and Educational Services. I oversee 2 Upward Bound Programs, 2 Educational Talents Search programs (possibility of 2 more by August 2006 – waiting on funding), First Generation College Student Program, Career Launch Program, Youth In Action Program, and 6 Educational Directors. Never thought I would be dealing with budgets totaling over $3 million with multiple funding guidelines and over 40 staff and 15 contractors. It is a very challenging position, but I absolutely love it. Work hard and believe in yourself and you can achieve anything.

Gabby Marquez, MSW 2004 writes: I accepted a position as a Social Worker to coordinate the Office of Social Services at New York University. And...I just passed the exam to be licensed in New York! Good luck to all of you...by the way, don't wait too long before taking the licensure exam!

Frances McConnell, MSW 2004 writes: I am living in Atlanta, GA. I am emplyoyed with Georgia Mentor, a therapeutic foster care and adoption agency. I am a Clinical Coordinator for the Child and Adolescent Unit. It is very challenging, but rewarding at the same time. Hope you all are doing well.

Kimberly McElroy, LMSW 2004, was recently promoted to director of therapeutic  foster care for the Alston Wilkes Society in South Carolina. Kimberly is also a field instructor for the College of Social Work.  

Sherianne (Pancho) McKee, LMSW 2004, writes: I spent 3 ½ years working for the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Goodwill Industries and ended my career there as the Social Work Team Leader.  I had a dual role of supervisor and direct-service provider.  From my experience with this position, I realized that the aspect of my job that I truly enjoyed was counseling individuals with vision loss.  I decided to take my career path in a different direction because of that and am now a Staff Social Worker for the Ontario County Mental Health Center.  I just started my new position and I know I have a lot to learn!  I’m looking forward to this new challenge and hope to be a Clinical Social Worker in a few years with the intent of having my own practice one day.  My best to everyone! 

Sara Cornwell Nolette, MSW 2004, LMSW, married Charlie Nolette on May 29. Sara’s former field supervisor asked her to assist in opening Hospice Care of America in Beaufort, S.C. She started her new position in June.

Brandi Palmer, MSW 2004, writes:  I obtained my LMSW and I am currently employed at Fort Jackson. I am a Exceptional Family Member Program Coordinator under Army Community Service.

Despina Panagopoulou, MSW 2004, returned to Athens, Greece to volunteer for both the 2004 Olympic Games and the 2004 Paralympic Games.  She writes: I have to say I will miss the Olympic and Paralympic Athens and all that comes with such events! Now, after all this, the search for a job has started.

Tracey Phillips, LMSW 2004, is an assistant professor at Springfield College's School of Human Services in Charleston, S.C. She is also a doctoral candidate at Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling. 

Omni Porter, MSW 2004, lives in Rock Hill, S.C., and is a mental health professional at the Catawba Family Service Center.

Cindy Raybould, LMSW 2004, writes:  I am a LMSW working as the Assistant Veterans Affairs Officer for Aiken County, helping veterans and their families receive the benefits due them. Korey Reynolds, MSW 2004 writes: I am living in Chicago and working for an employee assistant program, Compsych, as a Guidance Consultant. I do assessments and connect people with resources for mental health services. I am also going to be an Aunt for the second time in 3 weeks :)

Maria Janet Rodriguez, MSW 2004, owns Hispanic Awareness, which provides training and workshops to help others understand and appreciate Hispanic culture. She also works for the SC Department of Social Services. She reports that her husband retired from the Army, her oldest daughter got married and is living in Pennsylvania, and her youngest daughter attends Winthrop University.

Mary Rogers, MSW 2004, lives in Bennettsville, S.C., Monday through Friday with her mother, who recently had some health setbacks. She is the mental health court coordinator for Marlboro County and will be working for the local mental health clinic and the courthouse to keep persons with mental illness who have run-ins with the court system stable in their own communities. The program is funded by a three year grant. Mary says the Tri-County Mental Health Clinic has other openings for MSW’s if any of her fellow alumni are interested. Her cell number is 803-920-6742.

Sarah (Greenfield) Rogers, MSW 2004, works for Lexington Baptist Church Counseling Center. She go married in August 2005.

Ross Dean Sparboe, MSW 2004 writes: I am clinical Detox counselor at LRADAC here in Columbia.

Ele Starr, MSW 2004, writes: Hi- I just got my licensure last month and have recently started a new job. I am working at Carolina Medical Review as a Medicaid Behavioral Health Specialist. I really enjoy it. Although I am not doing direct client practice the skills I learned in the social work program assist me daily. I am thankful to the university and the education offered through the college of social work that I was able to get a great job and continue to serve persons in our community who so greatly deserve quality services and commitment. -

Charmella Tyler, MSW 2004 writes: I am a Prevention Case Manager at a non-profit organization, PALSS, here in Columbia. I work with HIV positive persons who are at high-risk of transmitting the virus to others. I just started this job in October. After graduation, I worked as a clinical counselor at a non-profit agency named Bridges. This was a day program for persons with various mental illnesses. In the near future, I plan to return to school to pursue my doctorate in Public Health. I hope everyone from the Advanced Standing 2004 class is doing well

Charleta Wylie, MSW 2004, writes: Currently, I am a social worker in Mecklenburg county (Charlotte, NC)with DSS as a CPS investigator. All is going great, and I am so happy for so many people who recently graduated the program and was able to find a job!

Intae Yoon, PhD 2004, has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in social work at West Chester Univesity in Pennsylvania.

Donna Slack Bulger, MSW 2003, is currently employed with State Office Department of Social Services as a Foster Care Consultant in Program & Policy and just recently appointed by Richland County Council to The Greater Columbia Community Relations Council for a 3 year term which ends in 2010.

Carrie Dennison Elliott, MSW 2003, a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, is a recipient of the Louis E DeMoll Endowed Presidential Scholarship.

Karen E. Ham, LMSW 2003, works for Winyah Community Hospice Care.

Monica Johnson, MSW 2003, writes: I am currently living and working in Columbia, SC. I am a Career Counselor at Midlands Technical College. Previously, I worked as a Youth Counselor for Calhoun County Public School District. Best Wishes to all of the College of Social Work grads and a special salute to the Class of 2003.

Amanda Martin, MSW/MPH 2003, left South Carolina last September to relocate to Latin America. She is an international team member of Witness for Peace. The organization focuses on fair trade, social justice, and Latin American peace.

Lisa Nelligan, MSW 2003, works at Hospice Care of Tri-County (Sumter, SC).

Judith Nelson (now Judy Hamilton), MSW 2003 is currently working in Augusta, GA for Nephrology Centers of America as a medical social worker. Under LISW-CP supervision with Bob Bradford of Limestone College.

Jenny Powers, MSW 2003, after completing her MSW, Jenny worked two years as a clinical social worker in Charleston, SC with youth and families. She is currently working toward her PhD in social work from Portland State University. Her dissertation focuses on youth in foster care with disabilities.

Robert G. Sanchez-Langston, MSW, BSW 2003, lives in Winston-Salem, N.C., and is the staff development and training coordinator for the local DSS. He began a part-time MPA program at UNC Greensboro last fall

Mona Sawiris, MSW/MPH 2003. Mona has a new job at the Department of Mental Health in Camden, S.C. She counsels teenaged students who are placed in special education services because of mental health disorders. Although she still lives in Columbia, S.C., Mona has moved a little closer to her new job. She sends her sincere thanks to everyone who assisted in her job search.

Sandy Sims, MSW 2003, works for the Appalachian District Hospice as a social work supervisor. She travels within three counties that are all located in the mountains of N.C.

Kesha Wall, MSW 2003 (Advance Standing) writes: I immediately took a position as Program Coordinator of the South Carolina Geriatric Education Center (SC-GEC) at the Medical University of South Carolina. The SC-GEC's aim is to develop and deliver training and education to the range of professionals, faculty, and students who are active, or seeking to become active, in the fields of geriatric care and gerontology. Personally, I just purchased my first home and my 11 and 13 year old daughters are keeping me busy (but I welcome the stress)!!!

Tara Wilkinson, MSW 2003, works for Capstone Companies, which is based in Alabama, as a start-up specialist. She works out of a home office in Rhode Island and travels throughout the country serving as a consultant for residence life programs. Christine Dawkins-Brewster, MSW 2002, has accepted a position with DC Child and Welfare Services in Washington, DC. She will be relocating to the area in late August. DC Child and Family Services is focused on recruitment of social workers to work in foster care and adoptions.

Sybil Derry, MSW 2002 writes: I am currently working in the Metro Detroit area
for a national Hospice organization. I cover the southern Michigan and Detroit area. I have lived in the area for a little over two years and I still hate the weather! But the job is GREAT!

Kelly J. Eppley, MSW, 2002, writes: I moved to the Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina shortly after graduation and found work first with a local United Way and later with an organization serving children and adults with developmental disabilities. Last summer, I finally found and accepted a position that feels like the perfect marriage between a background in writing and editing and my social work education and interest. I’m now serving as the Social Services Manager for Mandala Adoption Services, an international adoption agency in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I manage the home study process for prospective adoptive parents, including contracting with social workers across the state to conduct home studies and editing those studies as families move through the adoption process. In addition, I’m taking Spanish classes at a local community college, and just last spring, I bought a house and adopted, arguably, the cutest dog in the ! world! As the t-shirt says, “Life is good...”

Beverly W. Holmes, MSW 2002. is currently working as a Clinical Researcher with the Clinical Trials Network (CTN) of the National Institute of Drug Abuse and is housed at LRADAC on Devine Street. The CTN conducts clinical trials on promising behavioral, pharmacological or integrated treatments within substance abuse programs. She has also been an active member of the Minority Interest Group whose purpose is to develop a strategic plan for the CTN on minority participation in clinical trials.

Shin Yun, LMSW 2002(Certificate of Gerontology), currently works at Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital in the Heart Center as a medical social worker.

Donna W. Aubuchon, MSW 2001, works at Broughton Hospital, Morganton NC. She writes: After obtaining my MSW, I received a promotion to Social Work Supervisor of the Specialty Services Division at Broughton Hospital.

Anton Gunn, MSW 2001, is the Executive Director of South Carolina Fair Share, a nonpartisan, statewide membership organization made up of low income, moderate income and everyday South Carolinians representing a diverse combination of affected consumers, individuals, citizen activists, and organizations concerned with consumer and progressive social change issues.

Dr. Cynthia McFadden, DHSc; LMSW, MSW 2001, recently completed a Doctor of Health Science Degree from Nova Southeastern University. Currently works at as Director of Mental Health Services for Columbia Care Center

Kimberly Sommerville, MSW 2001, is employed at the Center for Elders Independence ( a PACE program) in Oakland, Calif. Kimberly also fulfilled a life-long dream of attending culinary school in 2005. Class of 2000

Jocelyn J Boudreau, MSW 2000, currently works as Corporate Trainer for the Rosecrance Health Network. We are an affiliated group of addictions treatment programs that consists of an adult treatment center, an adolescent treatment center, two recovery homes for female adolescents and a recovery home for women with children. I am responsible for developing and presenting training for new clinical staff. I am also heavily involved in assessing and monitoring clinical competency standards. It is exciting and exhausting work and I've loving every minute of it! My time at USC prepared me to meet each emerging challenge. I am proud to be a part of a new generation of social workers who continue to grow and expand the field.

Wendy Campbell, MSW 2000, is on faculty in the social work department at Winthrop University and loves it. She and her family, including husband, Bill, and daughters Lucy and Sally, are doing great!

Mary Katherine (Nelson) Daniels, MSW 2000, began working after graduation as an early interventionist with Columbia- based Bright Start, helping developmentally disabled children from ages birth to three years old. She helped Bright Start develop a satellite office in Spartanburg and later moved to Atlanta with her husband, Matt. Now living in Charlotte, Katherine was case coordinator for the Carlton Watkins Center, working with developmentally disabled children until giving birth to son Nelson, who turned a year old Aug. 30,2007.    

Jill Fogerty, MSW 2000 works for Villa Fairmont MHRC-Telecare. She writes: I moved to the Bay Area to take a job at a sub-acute psychiatric hospital in 2000. I am taking the social work licensure exams this year (2004).

Amy K. Linder, MSW 2000, is the Associate Director of Foundation, Corporate and Government Relations at Hamilton College in New York.

Sandra McClendon, MSW 2000 writes: I am licensed (LMSW) in Mississippi and work for the Department of Mental Health at the State Office. I am a program evaluator for children's day treatment programs (274 programs)and 5 therapeutic foster care agencies that we license. I have completed my supervision and will in the near future be taking the LCSW exam.

Patrick J. Patterson, MSW/MPH 2000, is program specialist at the Administration for Children and Families in Philadelphia, Pa. Patrick was nominated for a Federal Executive Board Excellence in Government Award. He is a finalist for nonsupervisory rookie of the year.

 


Class of 1999

Criss Barin, MSW 1999, has joined the team at the Pediatric Tumor Foundation of the United States as their new national programs administrator. While completing the MSW at the COSW, Barin worked as an intern and graduate assistant with the FACT project at Mars Hill College.

Kirsten Ostegren Clark, MSW 1999, is expecting her first child in Novemeber 2004. She lives in Columbia Heights, MN.

Jennifer Murray Connell, MSW 1999, and her husband, Christian Connell, Ph.D., a 2000 graduate of the U.S.C. Clinical/Community Psychology program, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter Clare Margaret Connell in March 2000. Connell will be returning to her job as clinical instructor of social work at the Yale Child Study Center, where she works in the Family Support Service Program doing community-based family and foster care preservation/reunification. In addition, Connell is working on a pilot project called Good Faith Parenting, which is a collaboration between Yale mental health professionals and community church leaders.

Shannon (Watson) Cook, MSW 1999, is a counselor for the older blind through the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.  Sharon got married in October 2003 to Steve Cook, Jr. of Lancaster SC.

Jay Gabbard, MSW 1999 writes:  I have just accepted an Assistant Professor position in Social Work at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. My wife Stephanie and son Blake are doing great and we are excited about this new chapter of our lives.

Jay Gabbard, MSW 1999, writes the following. After graduating in 1999, I began Ph.D. studies in social work at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I am currently a third-year student and have recently begun work on my dissertation proposal. My substantive topic area is the provision of mental health services to severely mentally ill (SMI) homeless individuals. I also have also been involved in research on therapeutic work with juvenile sex offenders, interventions with aging caregivers of adult SMI children, and the impact of spirituality on health/mental health. I got married in June of 2001 to the former Stephanie McFerren of Weirton, West Virginia and we reside in Birmingham, AL. In June of 2001, I was awarded a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Minority Research Fellowship and I was renewed for the fellowship for the 2002-2003 year. Jennifer L. Reed, MSW 1999, is currently employed with the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Developmental Disabilities, Region One Intake and Evaluation Team. Her daughter, Brigetta, is a fourth grader at Northwest Elementary in Chatsworth, Ga. Jennifer took up motorcycling in 2005, and her longest trip to date has been to Savannah , Ga. 

Carolyn H. Smith, MSW 1999, is Laurens County director for the South Carolina Department of Social Services.   

Tamara Smith, LMSW 1999, is program director for Community Support Programs with Aiken Barnwell Mental Health Center, where she coordinates services for its psychosocial rehabilitation program, peer support programs, individual placement supported program, and the federally funded mental health treatment study. The  peer support program Tamara works with recently was awarded the Heroes in the Fight Award for Best Program in 2007. In October 2007 ABMHC plans to open a Shared Decision Making Center. Tamara took and passed the LMSW  licensure exam in September 2007. 

A. Michelle Varner, LCSW 1999,  currently works as a survey consultant with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. Was recently named as treasurer of the board of directors for HOPE (HIV Outreach Programs and Education).  She served as the 2002 co-chair for the 10th annual Winston Salem Dining for Friends to benefit HOPE and AIDS Care Service. 

Jackie Jayon Whitmore, MSW 1999, was featured in the July 3, 2004, issue of The State newspaper in an article about his work with Lang Syne Plantation. The plantation, located near Fort Motte, S.C., was populated by his ancestors and is a place of reunion for many members of his family each year. “This place is like Mecca to us, says Jay, a Columbia social worker who traces his ancestry back seven generations to a slave woman named Amiker Spann Bryant. The family reunion is in its 10th year, and this year brings together several hundred descendants of those who lived on the plantation before and after the Civil War.


Class of 1998

Ian Hamilton, MSW 1999, and Noreen O’Donnell, MSW 1998, are both COSW graduates. Ian recently resigned from his position as the director of public policy at Voices for South Carolina’s Children to become a stay-at-home Dad. He is now working part time from home for the South Carolina Cancer Alliance. Noreen is currently working as the program coordinator for the Ryan White program at DHEC. Their first child, William Sloan Hamilton, was born in March 2004.

Gene Rodgers, MSW 1998, was recently promoted to state director of behavioral health services, a community and home-based provider of mental health services. Gene was elected president of North Carolina’s largest and most influential association, representing providers of community-based services, the North Carolina Providers Council.

Amy Bernstein, LCSW, CH, EFT-ADV , MSW 1997, owns Lakeside Counseling and Hypnotherapy Center in Mooresville, N.C. The center offers counseling in hypnotherapy and emotional freedom techniques. 

Marilyn Hilton-Brown, MSW 1997, lives in August, GA., and is a renal social worker and adjunct professor at Pain College. She is married to Dr. Reginald V. Brown, a doctor of internal medicine.

R-U-2 BUSY? That’s the question Pearlie Hodges, MSW 1997, local author and 1997 COSW graduate, asks in her newly published book titled Busy. A short and easy-to-read fable for the overworked and stressed out 21st century, Busy tells the story of a man so obsessed with making it to the top that he loses the one thing that is most dear to him. With her husband currently serving in Iraq, Pearlie has gained a much deeper appreciation for the things in life that matter most. And as a social worker, who has worked several years with incarcerated juveniles and families at the S.C. Department of Social Services, Pearlie has seen firsthand the devastation that too much “busyness” can have on families, particularly children. Through her book, Pearlie hopes to compel people to slow down some and start investing in the things in life that don’t fade with time. She says they’re guaranteed to pay much higher dividends than! you ever could imagine. Busy is available at local book stores. Pearlie works as program manager at Moncrief Army Community Hospital at Fort Jackson.

Nancy Garfield, MSW 1997, lives in Atlanta and is a Psychotherapist in private practice at Northwest Behavioral Medicine. She is also managing director for PsychSource,a national mental health database.

Valerie L. Harrington, MSW 1997, (My last name was Nye at Graduation). writes: Harrington named executive director of StepUp! Valerie Harrington, A native of Myrtle Beach and an experienced social worker, Valerie Harrington is the executive director of the newly developed StepUp! program in Horry County. Coastal Carolina University recently received a $750,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to fund StepUp!, a community engagement program that will organize, train and place volunteers with area nonprofit organizations throughout the Grand Strand community.

Since childhood, Harrington has made it her lifelong mission to give back to the communities where she has lived—“to give a hand up to those that need assistance, not a hand out.” Hoping to instill her passion for social work in others, she teaches social work classes at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Most recently, she served as the executive director for CARETEAM Inc. in Myrtle Beach.

Harrington’s previous work experience includes serving as an independent counselor in the field of sexual assault, teen pregnancy prevention and child abuse. She earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina.

A graduate of Leadership Grand Strand (LGS), Harrington has served on the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Regents for LGS. She is a member of the Grand Strand Optimist Club and has served at the local and state levels of numerous community organizations including SharedCare, Waccamaw Regional Prevention Collaboration, Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC’s) STD/HIV Division and State of South Carolina Consumer Advisory Work Group.

Tricia Tiller (Lanahan) Johnson, LCSW, MSW 1997, is a school social worker in Buncombe County Schools, Asheville, N.C., and is certified as a Level 1 EAGALA   therapist who has worked with Horse Sense of the Carolinas using  Equine- Assisted Psychotherapy with children, adolescents   and families.   She married James Johnson (Carolina Law School alumnus) in 2003 and gave birth to a baby boy, Tiller, May 16,2007. 

Karen Wilk Macario, MSW 1997, works as a full-time mom with two children, ages 6 and 2. Professionally, Karen is on the support staff in the ER at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, doing psychiatric and chemical dependency assessments and filling in for full-time employees as needed. In 2004, Karen and her husband, Camilo (1999 USC computer science grad), founded a nonprofit organization, Maya Tech Learning Center, Inc., that provides computer technology to underserved communities in Guatemala.

Michael Ottone, LISW-CP, MSW 1997 writes: "Currently, I live in Irmo w/my wife Cindy (USC-MPH, 1998) and our children Emily (5) and Brennan (3). I am the Program Manager for the Adolescent Males AOD Treatment Program at SC-Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. I also am an adjunct professor for the COSW, teaching Group classes (724, 710). And, I always have at least 1 intern out here from COSW."

Donna Rae (Confer) Thompson, MSW 1997, is the team leader for the Child and Adolescent Emergency Services Program at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health in Conway. She writes that many of her colleagues in the social work program knew about the loss of her 12-year-old daughter to Rett’s Disorder in 1993 and knew that she had another child at home, Lindsay. In August 2000, Lindsay was killed in an automobile accident at age 17. Waccamaw Mental Health is offering a new program to assist grieving children in Horry County in a week-long summer camp this August. The camp was named after Lindsay to honor her memory and the work she did as a camper and a counselor at a previous camp similar to Camp Linz’s Kids.

Melanie (Williams) Walker, MSW 1997, is the social worker and bereavement coordinator for the Greenville Hospital System Hospice in South Carolina.

Debora Allen, MSW 1996 relocated to Columbus to be near her 3 grandchildren and works for Columbus Hospice Inc.

Erling "Len" Fredrickson, MSW 1996 LISW-CP, CCSAS, recently earned a credential as a Certified Clincial Sex Addiction Specialist through the AACCSAS. Len works for the USC Center for Child & Family Stuides as a trainer and curriculum developer. He also operates Vision for Life (www.visionforlife.us), offering professional office space and practic development coaching to independent practitioners.

Lynne (Bolt) Hansen, MSW 1996, joined the University of South Florida College of Medicine as a faculty administrator for the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences June 2007. Her current primary responsibility is the coordination of reaccreditation activities for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program; in spring 2008 she will focus on curriculum development and faculty support. She is married to Emmy Award-winning television director Dennis “Chip” Hansen and mom the Jillian, Sullivan and Hayden.

Rosetta Harmon Penny, MSW 1996, is a school social worker for the Child Study Team Special Education Department with Richland County School District one in South Carolina.

Marcia Davis Taylor, LMSW, MSW 1996, is the victim services program manager for CASSA/Family Systems in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She has the managerial/administrative responsibility for domestic violence and sexual assault programs. Marcia recently became certified by the National District Attorneys Association in its National Child Protection Training Center program as a forensic interviewing children and preparing for court in alleged cases of sexual and physical abuse.

Allen W. Barbare, LMSW 1995, was named director of the Laurens County Department of Social Services in January. Prior to becoming director, Barbare spent nine years at Anderson County DSS as a case- worker and a human service consultant. Allen has been an instructor in the Human Services Department at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, SC since 2004. Allen teaches case management, behavior modification, interviewing skills, social work and activity therapy.

Lynn P. Cusik, MSW 1995, recently changed jobs and now works as an oncology and grief counselor for the Cancer Society of Greenville County, a nonprofit agency that provides financial, physical, emotional, and educational support for cancer patients and their families.

Rebecca "Becky" Finney, MSW 1995, is in her fifth year as Social Work Supervisor III at Davie County DSS in Mocksville, North Carolina. She supervises the Adult Services Unit, Emergency Assistance Unit, and Work First Employment Services Unit. Becky worked as an Adult Services Social Worker at Davie County DSS for eight years prior to pursuing her MSW degree from USC College of Social Work.

Kay Selby (York), MSW 1995 writes: I am licensed in SC, AL and GA with a clinical license in GA. I am currently employed as the Program Director of a therapeutic foster care agency in Columbus, GA.

Mike Nienhuis, MSW 1994, is now a physician. He graduated from the USC School of Medicine. When he took his gerontology certificate under Dr. Euster, he became so intrigued with some of his work, including some of his work with the medical school geriatrics faculty, that he decided to become a doctor. His wife, Amy Andrews, (Class of 1993), has worked in medical social work since she finished school. She is now employed in the Pediatrics Department at Palmetto Richland Hospital. The couple has two sons.

Teresa Rhodes, MSW 1994, previously worked for Limestone College and now directs a program in Charleston for Springfield College of Massachusetts.

Karen Smith Rotabi, PhD, LMSW, MPH 1994, writes: I completed my PhD in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004. Since that time, I have worked as a program coordinator of a large federal grant managed by UNC to support National Guard and Reserve Families (for more information www.RibbonsToReality.org). In the fall of 06, I will begin a new faculty appointment at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am very pleased with this career opportunity. Sadly, I never had the opportunity to interview with USC for a faculty position. At the end of the day, I find that these things usually work out for the best.

Michael Nienhuis, MSW 1994, wrote on behalf of his wife, Amy Nienhuis, MSW 1993, who recently was a recipient of the “Heroes in the Field” Award in honor of the significant contributions in reducing the incidence of infant mortality. Carol M. David, LISW-CP, MSW 1990, is in her 20th year as a clinical social worker with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health in Columbia, S.C. She works in forensics. Carol also rescues strays and encourages people to spay and neuter their pets because there just are not enough homes for all the cats and dogs that are already here. (Carol is currently looking for a loving, indoor home for the most puurfect, blue-eyes, gorgeous sweet kitty!)

Karyl Jennings, LCSW, MSW 1990 writes the following: I have recently accepted a commission in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. I am working as a medical social worker in a Primary Care Clinic for the Indian Health Service in Anchorage, Alaska. I have lived in Alaska for four years, have three children and through international adoption will be adding another son to my family this fall. Amanda Burts, MSW 1985, was married on June 22, 2002 to Michael Kelischek in Brasstown, NC. She is in her sixth year of employment with Smoky Mountain Counseling Center as a therapist with Adult Mental Health- an agency that covers the seven westernmost counties of North Carolina. She practices in very rural Cherokee County in Marble, NC.

Peggy ( Perry ) Copulsky, MSW 1985 recently was promoted to Social Services Coordinator for Wiregrass Hospice in Dothan, Alabama.

Martha Hinson, MSW 1989, works for DHEC and writes: I remarried since my husband Patrick Davis died and I have a son now. I’m proud of my niece, Mary Katherine Gainey. (Mary Katherine graduated from the MSW program at USC spring 2004.)

Jo Anne St. Clair, MSW 1987, writes: I coordinate the South Side Neighborhood Pride Center for the City of Columbus and serve as the Neighborhood Liaison. In my capacity of working with neighborhood leaders, I co-chaired the Regional Neighborhood Network Conference (RNNC) which is an annual conference representing leaders from 18 cities in five states. It was held last September in Columbus. I also received the Employee of the Year from the Department of Development in 2004. My son, Jon, is married and lives in the Charlotte, NC area.

Chuck Durant, MSW 1976, chairs the Board of Directors of Samaritan Health Ministries in Cedar Park, Texas. Samaritan is a volunteer clinic providing medical and dental services to the working poor who have no insurance or ability to pay for these services. Chuck works as administrator of Seton Northwest Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Margaret (Maggy) Seay Emmanuel, MSW 1977, is employed by the Jackson County Schools in Sylva, NC.

Denice Coleman Fisher, MSW 1977, is the executive director of A Chosen Child Adoption Services, a 501 (c) (3) licensed child-placing agency. She specializes in helping families adopted orphaned children from Russia, Guatemala, China, Ukraine, Colombia, and Thailand. She also provides services to U.S. birth parents considering adoption. Denice and her husband Mike live in Summerville. They have 2 daughters.

Felix Gravino, MSW 1975, writes: I am a clinical social worker at Anderson Oconee Behavioral Health Services. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I took a job up here to be in the mountains. My wife and I, in our spare time, run a 40 acre farm. We grow apples and blueberries. I am having the time of my life living in this paradise! Even rainy cold winter days are beautiful up here! My wife and I, married 33 years, are also certified beekeepers. We have 4 hives and will get more this spring. I have been in counseling over a span of 30 years; even spent a brief period working in a factory, which later helped me get an EAP job. It has been an adventure! My wife and I have two daughters Sara 29 and Carolina 28. Sara is the mother of twin girls; they are the joy of our life! When they come to see Mama and Papa, they say they are going to camp! My daughter Sara is a full time mom and my daughter Caroline is a million dollar producer for a real estate company ! in Baltimore.

Terri Branch Matthews, MSW 1975, is a full time lecturer in the department of social work at UNCC. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate students.

John G. McMaster, MSW 1971 writes:  I retired in 2000 from tne S.C. Dept. of Mental Health where I was the director and clinician for the Employee Assistance Program. While working for the state, my wife Judy (also an MSW) and I purchased rental property. We now manage those properties which really keeps us busier than we want to be. I am now a professional handyman. I can fix just about anything. We are, however, able to travel a good bit. We went to Ireland with the Carolina Travelers and have been to Holland, Spain, Thailand, Canada and will go on a 2 week river cruise in Russia this July. Retirement is great!

Carolyn Simpson Morris, MSW 1979, is Assistant Director of the Children's Law Center, School of Law, University of South Carolina.   The Children's Law Center is a statewide resource center for attorneys and other professionals involved in judicial proceedings related to children, particularly child maltreatment and juvenile justice.

Evelyn (Lyn) Phillips, MSW 1979, works as director of the South Carolina Birth Defects Program at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (Bureau of Maternal and Child Health).

Dr. Kin Sturkie, MSW 1973, is chair of and professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Clemson University, where he has taught for 26 years. In 2003 he received the Class of 1939 Award for Faculty Excellence, the highest award given to a Clemson faculty member.

Ron Vallario, MSW 1978, received his MD degree from Rutgers Medical School in 1986. He is currently practicing family medicine in Londonderry, Vermont for a non-profit health clinic. He is also an adjunct faculty member of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and certified in Geriatric Medicine. The non-profit clinic is part of the national Rural Health Clinic program that provides health care to underserved areas.

Dr. Judith Whiting, MSW 1976, is Self-employed – Berkeley Associates and received a Law degree May 2004.

Forrest (Hemphill) Yanke, MSW 1971, is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed marriage and family therapist in Florida. Living in Panama City, FLA., Forrest is a Christian social worker in the process of retiring after 25 years of practice. She earned a doctorate in philosophy in religion and societal studies in 1998, then taught part-time at Florida State University’s College of Social Work. She is now project director of the Homeless Day Resource Center, operated by the Homeless and Hunger Coalition of Florida, and supervises FSU’s College of Social Work undergraduate and graduate students who intern at the center.

Rear Admiral Thomas Carrato currently serves as the regional health administrator for region IV, which includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. As the regional health administrator, Carrato provides advice and participates in policy development and implementation of key health care initiatives in support of improved health status for the people of the South.
    Carrato was appointed as an assistant surgeon general of the United States on August 1,1997, and served in a wide variety of health care administration and program management positions in the Public Health Service and other federal agencies. Carrato holds a Master of Science degree from Georgetown University and a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. He is a licensed clinical social worker.

Elaine Coleman, MSW, has recently been offered a position as an assistant director at the Valenti House in Washington, D.C. Coleman is currently employed at Valenti as a mental health counselor. The Valenti House is named in honor of Mary Valenti, wife of Hollywood CEO Jack Valenti. Valenti House offers several programs, including an adult transition program, a crisis center, a long-term residential house, an advocacy program, and a drop- in center for socialization. 

Dr. Jeanne Cook, a graduate of the College of Social Work (COSW) doctoral program, was promoted to associate professor at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. Cook was also named chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Cook directs the college's new Bachelor of Social Work program, which is part of that department. In 2001 she was named Master Professor of the Year, the Coker College outstanding teacher award, which is selected by the student body.

Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities, Inc., (P&A) has a 25-year history of protecting the legal, civil, and human rights of South Carolinians with disabilities. In July 2003, P&A’s Board of Directors and staff presented to Nikki Fair, MSW, the Anthony J. Raymond Award. The award recognizes relentless advocacy efforts and contributions to enhance the lives of people with disabilities in South Carolina. Nikki is the 18th recipient of this award. Nikki has worked diligently to establish the Team Advocacy Project as a viable monitoring system for people with disabilities within the state. The project is responsible for conducting unannounced inspections of community residential care facilities and state inpatient facilities. Nikki has also been instrumental in monitoring children’s group homes and working with various developmental disability facilities.

Alice Hurley, a recipient of the college’s Pioneer Award in 2003, is one of the honorees in the 2004 Black History Calendar.

Teresa Rhodes received her Ph.D. in public health from the Medical University of South Carolina in May 2001. Dr. Rhodes is also a faculty member at Limestone College in social work.

Dr. Lynne Taylor, who earned her Ph. D. from the College of Social Work, was recently named executive director of Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina.

Diane Thompson and Elaine Ferraro of Columbia College are the recipients of the annual Distinguished Alumni Award.
