Background Information:

Margaret Gheen Hartzog, received her MSW from USC in 1977. She was tragically killed in a terrible car accident in 1996 on her way to visit a DHEC Home Health patient. Margaret Hartzog was a social worker who exemplified the spirit of this service profession by fully living every moment, her passion for the well-being of others always in evidence.

Becky Sparrow, class of 1971, who supervised Margaret's field placement wanted to do something special in her memory for the college, remembers: "Those who knew Margaret remember her great sense of humor, her eagerness to learn, her compassion for people and the environment, her perseverance in overcoming the challenges in her life, and her generosity in helping the disadvantaged.

It is my hope that this scholarship award will help future social work students to know and accept the meaning and price of growth and learning, serve as a reminder for faculty and field instructors of just how precious the teacher/student relationship is, and help us remember Margaret's incredible advocacy for her clients."
