Dorthea Crouch Kemp Fellowship

Pictured above from left to right are current dean of the College of Social Work, Dr. Dennis Poole; former dean, Dr. Frank Raymond; MSW alumna, Ms. Yancey Wise; current MSW student, Ms. Yakima Moore-Lindsey; current student Ms. Kimberly Tissot, and former dean, Dr. Leon Ginsberg.

2005-2006 Dorthea Crouch Kemp Fellowship Award Winner:

Ms. Moore-Lindsey and Ms. Tissot, pictured above, are the recipients of the Dorthea Crouch Kemp fellowship for the 2005-2006 academic year

Yakima Moore-Lindsey has been a clinical counselor in the human service field for more than 12 years, working with adolescents and their families addressing mental health and substance abuse issues. Kim has a BS in biology with collaterals in chemistry and sociology and is a certified addictions counselor and a substance abuse prevention consultant at both state and national levels. Kim aspires to become the executive director of a nonprofit agency focusing on strengthening and empowering families, preserving family units, and specializing in adolescent health programming.

Kim experienced abandonment by her mother during her youth but thrived on the support and encouragement of her extended family, especially her grandmother and father. When she lost these two mentors within three years of each other during and after college, she was able to recover through the support of community nurses, grief counselors, and social workers. She brings a passionate belief in the potential of the clients she serves. As the single mother of two small children, she actively seeks alternative funding streams for her education.

Kimberly LaJoie Tissot has recently completed her BS in Human Development with a concentration in Child Life. Kim chose internship experience in a hospital setting with children and their families who were dealing with chronic, acute, or terminal illnesses. She wants to be able to provide advice to caregivers, counsel patients, and develop discharge plans for community-based care post-discharge. After experience in other community-based settings involving children, Kim aspires to eventually pursue a PhD so she can teach social work in a college.

Kimberly has experienced many physical challenges in her life and has learned to overcome them through determination. She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of two and is a 20-year survivor. Treatment included a two-year regimen of chemotherapy and radiation and required amputation of her left leg. As a result of the treatment, she must deal with chronic degenerative disease processes. She wants to become a social worker because of her strong desire to help improve the lives of individuals. Kimberly recently married and actively seeks alternative funding streams for her long-term educational pursuits.

Fellowship Description:

Ms. Yancey Wise, College of Social Work MSW alumna, devoted her life as a clinical social worker to help others in need. That devotion burns stronger than ever in retirement. A 1981 graduate of the College, Ms. Wise has established a scholarship fund in memory of her mother, Dorthea Crouch Kemp, a 1941 USC alumna, who passed away. The fund supports a permanent clinical social work fellowship for deserving graduate students in the College’s MSW program. The funds are to be used to support students who would not otherwise be able to attend the MSW program
