First-year MSW student and Texas native Julie Fox is the 2006 recipient of the Frank B. Raymond III Social Work Fellowship. On a brisk fall day, Fox and Raymond met on the Horseshoe where she was able to personally thank him for his contribution to her educational pursuit.
Fox, who earned an undergraduate degree in journalism from Radford University, said she researched many Social Work programs and chose USC’s because she appreciated the opportunity it offers to pursue a micro or macro concentration.
“That is because my idea about what I wanted to do was constantly changing from week to week,” she joked. “I thought this program would expose me to both clinical work and community development.”
Fox said she has enjoyed her experience at the College of Social Work, especially since meeting and been instructed by Associate Professor Dr. Terry Wolfer.
“He is very intelligent and engaging,” she said. “His classes focus on discussion, not lecture, and he likes his students to be very involved.”
When Fox arrived as a student, her career aspiration was to counsel the families of substance abusers she currently works as a substance abuse and aggression counselor at the Department of Juvenile Justice, and has worked at a boys’ home in Virginia. However, since being influenced by Wolfer, Fox admits she has changed her career direction again and would like to focus on community development and advocating for communities in poverty and children’s issues.
