Mr. Sung Kyun Choi was elected to serve as president of the Korea Association of Social Workers (KASW) 2002-2005. Mr. Choi is a member of the first graduating class of the College of Social Work's Korea-based Masters of Social Work (MSW) program in 1995.
The KASW membership accounts for about 60,000 with 280 delegation members. Delegates vote the president for the 3-year term, with one renewable appointment. Mr. Choi was duly elected with an impressive 80% of the vote. KASW memberships consist of professional social workers holding advanced degrees in social work.
In 1962 he entered into the Kang Nam University Social Work program, which is the oldest co-ed program in social work in Korea. Mr. Choi graduated in 1969 with a Bachelors in Social Work. He completed a graduate work seminar from Louisiana State University in 1991 and earned his MSW from the University of South Carolina in 1995 in the College's Korea-based MSW Program.
Mr. Choi has occupied leadership positions for private and public social work agencies. He is a Class I Social Worker, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Gerontological Social Work Specialist as recognized by KASW. Scholarly publications include: Vocational Training for the Youth: An Aftercare Model (1985); The KASW: 30 Years of History (1990); and Korean Social Workers Today (1997).
