The University had nearly 2,200 full-time faculty at its eight campuses in fall 2008, including more than 1,600 in Columbia. In addition, nearly 4,300 full-time staff--more than 3,500 in Columbia--support the University.

South Carolina faculty garnered $206 million in federal, state, and private funding for research, outreach, and training programs for fiscal year 2008. The record figure was an 11.3 percent increase from the previous year.

The University has aggressively recruited new faculty through two hiring programs, one focused on research and another on interdisciplinary clusters. Some 600 new faculty have been or will be hired in the next several years, infusing even more talent and expertise into South Carolina's mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service.
