Each year the College of Social Work awards several fellowships, scholarships, and PhD research assistantships. These are competitive – awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement and financial need.

Applications for the 2017-2018 Academic Year will be open and available on Thursday, June 15. The deadline will be Friday, July 21 at 5 p.m.

Please be aware that receiving a fellowship may impact your total financial aid package, including loans.

Staff Fellowship Award

The staff members of the College of Social Work are pleased to offer the Staff Fellowship Award (SFA) again this year! The SFA was established by staff members of the College of Social Work in 2014 to assist a non-resident Master’s of Social Work (MSW) student who has demonstrated a commitment to serving vulnerable populations and improving the social well-being of communities. The purpose of this fund is to provide support for at least one out-of-state MSW student for up to two years through a $1,000 award. All interested applicants must be a U.S. citizen, admitted as a full-time MSW student for the 2017-2018 academic year and not have a graduate assistantship for the 2017-2018 academic year. The award(s) will be based on academic achievement (minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0), as well as completion of the application and essay. Anna Scheyett Pay It Forward Fellowship (INTENDED FOR BSW or MSW STUDENTS)

The Anna Scheyett Pay It Forward Fellowship was established by College of Social Work faculty and staff in honor of Dean Anna Scheyett. This fellowship supports an MSW or BSW student with financial need who has an interest in social work with populations who struggle with financial insecurity.

Criteria:

  • BSW or MSW student
  • Focused on student with financial need who has an interest in working with populations who struggle with financial needs
  • Applicants will need to answer the question: When you are an established professional, what are ways in which you will “pay it forward” and support future social work students?

Amount: 1 award of $1,000 (2017-2018)

Sarah and Sallie Campbell Youth and Family Fund (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Sarah and Sallie Campbell Youth and Family Fund supports an MSW student whose academic and career focus is the mental health application of social work and service to youth and/or families. Preference will be given to a student(s) in the part-time program in Charleston, student(s) who lives in or is a native of the Pee Dee region or Charleston County and a student(s) who is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Foundation, or Advanced year MSW student (full-time or part-time)
  • Focused on mental health applications and approaches for youth and/or families

Amount: 2 awards of $500

Dorothea Crouch Kemp Fellowship (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Dorothea Crouch Kemp Fellowship fund supports a permanent clinical social work fellowship for deserving graduate students in the College’s MSW program. The funds are to be used to support students who would not otherwise be able to attend the MSW program.

Criteria:

  • MSW student
  • Student must have overcome a major challenge(s) in life.
  • Student must demonstrate financial need

Amount: 2 awards of $2,500 (2017-2018)

Mike and Debra DuBose Scholarship Fund (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Mike and Debra DuBose Scholarship fund was established to support MSW students with a demonstrated financial need, with preference given to students that come from traditionally underrepresented populations.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Foundation or Advanced year MSW student (full-time or part-time)
  • Student demonstrates financial need.

Amount: 2 awards of $500

Charles L. Gheen, Jr. Fellowship (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Charles L. Gheen, Jr., Fellowship was established to assist students, based on financial need, with severe family situations that have proved difficult for the applicant to further his/her education.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Foundation, or Advanced year MSW student (full-time or part-time), or PhD student
  • Must have severe family situation(s) that have proven difficult for the continuing of your education

Amount: 1 award of $500

Margaret Gheen Hartzog Memorial Scholarship Fund (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Margaret Gheen Hartzog Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to assist disabled students in the MSW or Ph.D. programs.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Foundation or Advanced year MSW student (full-time or part-time), or PhD student
  • Must have a documented disability and be registered with the Office of Student Disability Services.

Amount: 2 awards of $500

Tanya and Tom Carter Social Work Fellowship (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Tanya and Tom Carter Social Work Fellowship was established to financially assist an MSW student with a field placement in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Foundation or Advanced year MSW student (full-time or part-time)
  • Field placement must be in the Upstate during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Amount: 1 award at $500

Frank B. Raymond, III Bicentennial Scholarship Fund (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Frank B. Raymond, III Bicentennial Scholarship Fund supports full-time Foundation Year MSW students. Students should possess superior undergraduate academic records and demonstrate financial need.

Criteria:

  • Foundation Year MSW student (full-time only)
  • Student must demonstrate superior undergraduate academic performance
  • Student must demonstrate financial need

Amount: 2 awards of $500

Linda M. Summer Social Work Pioneer Fellowship (INTENDED FOR MSW STUDENTS)

The Linda M. Summer Social Work Pioneer Fellowship was established to recognize outstanding academic performance, leadership, and social work practice.

Criteria:

  • Advanced Standing, Advanced Year MSW student (full or part time), or PhD students
  • Demonstration of outstanding academic performance, leadership, and social work practice

Amount: 6 awards of $500
