The College's study-abroad program began in 1986, with a trip to Mexico. Since then, the College has sponsored overseas study for social work students and practitioners every year except 1993, when a course in Egypt had to be canceled because of incidents of violence against tourists.
The courses have always included graduate and undergraduate students from the University of South Carolina and other U.S. colleges and universities, faculty members from various universities, and social work practitioners. University credit is given by USC as well as continuing education units and contact hours recognized by the social work licensing board. Some universities and colleges also give credit for participation in the courses. Several hundred social workers and students have participated in these international courses over the years.
These trips provide students and practitioners the opportunity to learn about social work and human services in other countries. They include visits to agencies and lectures by social work professors and agency officials. The trips also enable participants to learn about another culture through visits to historic sites, museums, churches, and cultural events.
