Dr. Jinseok Kim selected to participate in the 2007 Summer Research Institute of the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) housed in Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (May 30 - June 3, 2007). He also has been awarded a minority fellowship to cover the costs of the trip for his study of "Contextual effects on children's experiences of child welfare services and their long term well-being." This is a nationally advertised and very competitive summer institute.

Dr. Cynthia Forrest was awarded the 2007 Hospice Leadership Award at the Carolina's Center annual clinical Hospice and Palliative Care conference, which is a two-state conference for hospice and palliative care providers.

Drs. Naomi Farber and Julie-Miller Cribbs manuscript "Kin networks and poverty among African Americans: Past and present" was just accepted for publication in Social Work, one of the leading journals in the profession.

Dr. Kathy Padget and Dr. Chad Rodi manuscript "Where local and national evaluators meet: Unintended threats to ethical evaluation practice" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Evaluation and Program Planning, a first-rate journal in the field of evaluation.

Dr. Shawna Lee recently was officially awarded a sub-contract from the University of Chicago via the Centers for Disease Control to fund her project, "Fathers and Risk for Physical Child Maltreatment: Prevention Pathways," which aims to to identify father-related pathways significantly altering young children’s risk for exposure to paternal and maternal physical child abuse.

On Monday, January 29, 2007 Stephanie K. Cooper-Lewter, M.S.W. was honored to be awarded by the Graduate School at the University of South Carolina a Graduate School Centennial Fellowship. This nomination for, and receipt of this award was in recognition of being an outstanding representative of the graduate program (College of Social Work), and of the excellence of her research and academic pursuits at the University of South Carolina.

Margaret Marter, the conference planner for The Center for Child and Family Studies, has been selected as one of ConventionSouth magazine’s “Meeting Professionals to Watch in 2007.”  This award is based on outstanding professionalism, creativity, and dedication to the meetings and convention industry. The magazine included a profile of Ms. Marter in their December 2006 issue. Ms. Marter was nominated by the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. She was previously nominated and selected in 2000 and 2001 by ConventionSouth as “One of the Top 100 Meeting Planners to Watch.”

Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and the College of Social Work Unite their Missions to Serve the Hispanic Community in South Carolina

Dr. Duncan Whyte (PhD graduate in Social Work) featured in the November 8, 2006 edition of Stars and Stripes in "Mental health needs take battle beyond the war zone."

Alumni Laura Rodriguez MSW graduate 2004 can be seen on WLTX video. She is senior clinical counselor at LRADAC. She as at the end segment of the video. http://www.wltx.com/hotwired/default.aspx click on the LRADAC video which may be seen for only next few weeks. Laura currently is adjunct faculty and is currently teaching SOWK 732, current Field Instructor, and also worked as a Graduate Assistant in the Field Education Office. Her son Jovan, is now enrolled in the MSW Program at the College of Social Work.

S.T.O.P. Violence Against Women, Silent Witness Ceremony held in Columbia, SC on October 2, 2006 featured many COSW staff, students and alumni.

Shannon Staley, COSW Student, and her colleagues purchased 200 tickets for the movie An Inconvenient Truth, for making it possible for 200 people who perhaps otherwise would not have seen it to attend. (The State Newspaper, July 8, 2006).

COSW Student Tiffany Harris featured on WIS-TV (Columbia) in a story titled "USC grad students ask lawmakers for payday lending restrictions" (WISTV.com, April 13, 2006)

COSW Alumni Amanda Martin traveled with a "Humanitarian Action" (HA) caravan, a group of 120 students, lawyers, human rights defenders, international peace workers, engineers, dental and medical students, photographers, and journalists to reach the remote village of Lejanias, Columbia. At the Council of Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting in Chicago during February 2006, Dr. Noël Bridget Busch, Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, was named the Social Work Teacher of the Year. Noel received a dual Master's degree in Social Work and Public Health as well as her PhD from the College of Social Work.
