Congratulations to Dr. Maryah Fram, who recently submitted a proposal to the Spencer Foundation titled, “Social Capital and Academic Achievement Among Middle School Youth.” Dr. Fram’s research aims examine how youth develop and use social capital, and how this relates to academic success during their transition into middle school.

Congratulations to Nancy Brown, Ph.D., who has just submitted a grant proposal to the Fahs-Beck Fund. Nancy’s proposal, The Domestic Violence Reduction Project for Recovering Women, is designed to reduce or prevent violence toward women who are recovering from problems with alcohol and other drug addiction. This project represents a unique way of providing services to women who are often estranged from traditional domestic violence services.

Dr. Johnny Jones and Dr. Jinseok Kim have submitted a proposal to the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Children and Families, to perform secondary analysis of the data available from the National Survey on Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW). Their goal is to examine how and to what extent child welfare agency organizational characteristics and management practices affect children’s experiences of child welfare services and, more importantly, their long term well-being.

One of our newest faculty members, Dr. Rita Chou, is the Co-Pi of a proposal to the RAND Corporation (with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation) to fund the creation of an interdisciplinary geratrics research center at the University of South Carolina. Along with the project's Principal Investigator, Dr. Darryl Wieland in the School of Medicine and Palmetto Health Richland, Dr. Chou would work on pilot research projects and with other faculty from around campus to strengthen our efforts in gerontological research.

Dr. Maryah Fram has submitted a proposal to the W.T. Grant Foundation titled “Measuring and Modeling Social Capital Effects on Academic Achievement Among Middle School Youth.” If funded, the project will examine social capital dynamics and academic achievement among students at Hand Middle School. The project promises to result in a psychometrically sound measure of youth social capital, and new knowledge on promoting school success among vulnerable youth.

Dr. Maryah Fram and Dr. Jinseok Kim submitted a proposal to the NIH titled, “Social Context, Inequality, and the Dynamics of Child Care” on February 1, 2006. Their project aims to examine the role of social context in influencing children’s development via their experiences in child care.

As part of a campus-wide collaborative team that includes faculty from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Education, Dr. Terry Wolfer recently submitted a grant to the National Science Foundation titled, “Ethics Immersion for Graduate Students in Science and Engineering.” The project will educate graduate students about ethics in science; Dr. Wolfer will contribute his expertise in teaching using the case study method.
