The Academic Administrators Academy offers faculty professional development for mid-career faculty who are typically new or relatively new to a faculty administrator role (e.g., department chair, associate dean, center director). The content focuses on practical training in administrative responsibilities and processes, based on specific needs identified by current and emerging leaders; it is not designed as personal leadership training or to be redundant of workshops offered by the Division of Human Resources. Each semester, academic administrators are encouraged to attend the 3 – 5 workshops organized by the Office of the Provost. Past topics have included workshops on faculty civility, faculty affairs, budget & finance, legal survival guide, human resources, professional development, and faculty governance.
The PAL Fellowship is a year-long invitation-only program for emerging campus leaders who are ready to take their already considerable talents to the next level while addressing USC's capacity-building needs. Over the course of the academic year, PAL Fellows will participate in 40-50 hours of targeted professional development activities focused on President Pastides’ Five Leadership Competencies:
- Leading Change
- Leading People
- Managing for Results
- Institutional Knowledge and Understanding
- Building Relatinoships
Within those broad categories, PAL Fellows will gain experience in budgeting and human resources processes, managing difficult people and conflict, and building a network outside one’s academic discipline. The group will explore USC’s values and strategic direction while learning more about the university’s culture, policies, and decision making. Fellows will also participate in an important process of self-discovery.

The SEC Academic Leadership Development Program (ALDP) was established in 2008 and its mission is to identify, prepare and advance future leaders. The program includes two on-campus workshops hosted by different SEC universities that bring together fellows from each SEC institution. In addition, USC fellows participate in a series of conversations with leaders across the USC Columbia campus and other development activities.
The SEC ALDP is one of several SEC activities that focuses on programs and activities designed to highlight the teaching, research and service accomplishments of SEC students, faculty and staff, including related successes within the Conference’s intercollegiate athletics programs.
