Russell Research and USC Educational Foundation Awards
The Russell Research Awards are the most prestigious annual prizes for research and scholarship given at Carolina. Each year the University of South Carolina recognizes faculty for outstanding research and scholarship. Full-time faculty of any track and rank are eligible to receive the awards.
Awards are given for innovative research or creative achievement in the form of books, articles, productions, exhibits, compositions or arrangements. A series of presentations can also be considered if each presentation is related to a defined research topic, problem or theme.
The Russell Research Award was established by Judge Donald S. Russell in 1957 and the USC Educational Foundation Research Award was established in 1984. Each award consists of a $3,000 prize and a certificate of recognition. The winner will be honored at the spring Faculty Awards ceremony.
- Nominee must be full-time faculty of any track and rank.
Nominations for the awards may be made by any university faculty member (including self-nominations) at any USC campus. The nominator should send a letter of intent to nominate to provcomm@mailbox.sc.edu.

Letters of intent should be emailed to provcomm@mailbox.sc.edu by Jan. 6, 2023.
The nominee's file should be organized according to the following format:
- Brief introductory statement by nominator concerning the nominee's research accomplishments and the reasons the individual should be considered for the award. Must be submitted in 12-point font and one-inch margins.
- A complete vita including a list of nominee's publications, graduate students supervised, research funding and major awards.
- Relevant sample reprints and/or other supporting materials.
- One letter of support from within the university appraising the significance of the research submitted for consideration (to be solicited by the nominator, mailed to the Office of the Provost or emailed directly to provcomm@mailbox.sc.edu.
- Two letters of support from outside evaluators who are qualified to evaluate the subject matter of the research submitted for consideration (to be solicited by the nominator, and mailed to the Office of the Provost or emailed directly to provcomm@mailbox.sc.edu).
Nominee's files are due to the Office of the Provost by Feb. 3, 2023.
The awards are divided into four categories by discipline. Each category has a separate selection committee, as described below:
Humanities and Social Sciences Selection Committee
- Addresses disciplines in the liberal arts, arts, humanities, social sciences, and related disciplines across the USC System.
- Selects a winner for a Russell Research award and for a USC Educational Foundation Research Award.
Science, Mathematics and Engineering Selection Committee
- Addresses disciplines in the sciences, engineering, information technology and mathematics across the USC System and related disciplines.
- Selects a winner for a Russell Research award and for a USC Educational Foundation Research award.
Health Sciences Selection Committee
- Addresses disciplines in the following schools and colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work on the Columbia campus, and related disciplines across the USC System.
- Selects a winner for a USC Educational Foundation Research award only.
Professional Schools Selection Committee
- Addresses disciplines in the following schools and colleges: Business, Education, Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management (HRSM), Law, University Libraries and Information and Communication at USC Columbia, and related disciplines across the USC System.
- Selects a winner for a USC Educational Foundation Research award only.
For each area, the selection committee will make a recommendation to the provost, who will select the winner. The winners will be presented at the spring Faculty Awards Ceremony.
