Biography

Helmut Albrecht, MD, serves as Chair of the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group Department of Medicine and also leads the USC School of Medicine academic Department of Internal Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and completed residencies at the University of Hamburg and Emory University in Atlanta. Albrecht completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Hamburg and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Emory University.

Dr. Albrecht has previously served as Chief of the USC Infectious Diseases Division and secretary, vice chief, chief of staff and Chief of Medicine for Palmetto Health Richland. Dr. Albrecht has also served as the President of the Columbia Medical Society, the President of the German AIDS Clinical Trial Group, and as the President of the SC Infectious Diseases Society. In 2014 the governor of SC installed him as a member of the SC Emergency Response Task Force. He has published over 250 papers and 50 book chapters. He is the current Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine.
