Dr. Dana DeHart, Assistant Dean for Research Support, was invited to attend the U.S. Department of Defense Victim Assistance Leadership Council meeting at the Pentagon on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, as a subject-matter expert. The Council was established on November 23, 2013 and membership includes the Office of the Secretary of Defense and service-level Family Advocacy Program senior personnel. The following day, Dr. DeHart provided an invited presentation entitled, “State of the industry: Victim service standards and implications for military staffing,” to the United States Secretary of Defense and the United States Marine Corps, Washington, DC. Dr. DeHart will provide ongoing consultation to both groups regarding victim services standards and staffing for the United States Military.

These events stem from Dr. DeHart’s work as Principal Investigator for the National Victim Assistance Standards Consortium, funded by the United States Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime, and coordinated through USC’s College of Social Work. The Consortium reached across geographic, philosophical, and disciplinary divides to forge a common ground in professional development for victim services. The Consortium drafted and maintains standards for victim service programs, professional competency, and professional ethics. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Victim Assistance-related programs adapted the Consortium’s standards for the military in DoDI 6400.07, Standards for Victim Assistance Services in the Military Community.

The Consortium standards have been recently updated and will soon be available on the OVC Website, and an article is forthcoming in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education regarding development of the standards.
